Lesson 2 - The man who ate an entire airplane

The average person wants to maintain a balanced diet in order to live a long and healthy life. Some people are vegetarians, while others follow new movements, like the Keto diet or the Flexitarian diet but hopefully we can all agree that an airplane is not part of a normal food regimen. As crazy as it sounds, that’s what a Frenchman Michel Lotito managed to do. Today we are going to watch a video about him and his very unusual diet.

🎧 Please watch the video once again and as you're watching, you will need to do a short quiz

💡 Here's some good vocabulary that can be useful in everyday conversations:

From a very young age, he was compelled to eat unorthodox substances.

When you are compelled to do something, you feel that you have to do it because it's necessary or because you are pressured to do so. For example: My neighbor is a lonely old lady, I feel compelled to help her.

RUS: вынужден, чувствовать необходимость, просто обязан, считать своим долгом

The triggering event was when the drinking glass he was using shattered...

Shatter means break into small pieces. For example: My phone fell down and the screen got shattered. Shatter also means to cause a lot of damage. For example: shattered dreams, shattered hopes, shuttered confidence. Susan was bullied at school and it shattered her confidence.

RUS: разрушить, разбить (вдребезги), сломать

instead of grabbing a broom and a dustpan, he cleaned up the mess by eating the broken glass.

In everyday English, people often say grab instead of take. For example: Can you grab this for me, please? Do you want to grab lunch sometime this week?

When you clean up the mess, you literally clean something, or sometimes it can be idiomatic, meaning solving someone's problems, getting someone out of trouble. For example: you work with someone on a project but they keep making mistakes, and you keep fixing them. So you are cleaning up their mess.

RUS: grab - взять, схватить

clean up the mess - убрать, разгрести бардак, навести порядок

clean up someone's mess - исправлять чьи-то ошибки

This is more than enough to kill the average person

More than enough means plenty, more than needed. For example: You're getting ready for a party and you've made so much food already, but you keep making more. So your friend might tell you: "Please don't make any more food. We have more than enough already".

RUS: более чем достаточно; выше крыши; даже больше, чем нужно

somehow he managed to digest a prodigious amount of metal

Prodigious is a synonym for huge, enormous, massive, very big. For example: His old car consumed a prodigious amount of fuel.

RUS: огромный, невероятный, поразительный

Physicians examined Lotito and determined he had a remarkably resilient digestive system

When someone is resilient, they are able to recover quickly from difficult conditions. For example: Children are more resilient than their parents realize.

RUS: стойкий, устойчивый

Rather than feeling concerned for his health, his neighbors were thrilled to watch him eat unconventional items.

When you are thrilled to do something, you are very happy to do it. For example: I am so thrilled to go on vacation!

RUS: в восторге, рад

In the course of his career, Lotito consumed 18 bicycles, 7 tv-sets….

Instead of saying during, you can say in the course of... For example: in the course of his life, in the course of his career, etc... He's met so many great people in the course of his life.

RUS: на протяжении, в течение, в процессе

By far, his greatest feed was eating an entire Cessna airplane

You use the expression by far when you are comparing something or someone with others of the same kind, in order to emphasize how great the difference is between them. For example: This is the by far the best chocolate cake I've had! (=definitely the best chocolate cake I've had)

RUS: безусловно, несомненно, намного, значительно, гораздо
