Lesson 4 - Easter basket for Jimmy Kimmel

Updated: Apr 10, 2021

Catholic Easter is just around the corner. In Canada and North America many people celebrate Easter. People who have kids usually do an egg hunt (you can watch a video about it here). Also, it is very common to make gifts for your family and close friends. Very often, it's an Easter basket filled with a bunch of stuff (you can see some pictures of Easter baskets here).

Let's watch a short video with Jimmy Kimmel talking about how he is getting ready for Easter and his Easter basket.

🎧 Please watch the video to get the main idea. Then watch it once again and fill in the gaps in the transcript below.

Are you ready for Easter? 🐰🐣My wife and I have been getting ready. Last night we 1. ______ eggs with our daughter Jane. Jane will be 3 in July so this is the first Easter she knows what's going on and it’s fun!

We got a box of egg coloring stuff in the drug store, the white 2. _______, we boiled the eggs, we put the little tablets and a little cups and we colored the eggs with the weird dipper thing. We let them dry, Jane put 3. _________ on the eggs. I tried to make one nice egg by dipping it in half in the color and then half in the other co... She just took it and threw it in the purple. It was... 😊 The whole process took about an hour and then we were done, eggs were all colored and we put them back in the 4. _______ and Jane asked: “Ok, now what do we do?” and I said “Well, we’re gonna put the eggs back in the refrigerator and wait for the Easter Bunny to come and hide them”. And she said: “Why?” And I just looked at her and said: “I don’t know”.

Is there a story we’re supposed to… Is there some kind of a plan? At least Santa 5. ___________ - he makes toys and if you’re good, he breaks into your house and leaves them for you. The Easter Bunny breaks into your house, takes your eggs out of your refrigerator and scatters them around the yard. It’s what an insane person might do. At best, it’s littering, okay? We need to 6. ___________ an explanation for this.

By the way, speaking of insane - quick poll of the audience. Are there any other 49 year-old men here whose mother still gets them an Easter basket every year? No? How about that? Well, this is mine. This is for real. My parents are not gonna be here, don’t say “Awe!” I take this under protest.

My mother gave me on Palm Sunday, she gave me an Easter basket because she’s not gonna be here on Easter and I’ve not opened it yet. Although, I’m gonna say, somebody 7. _______ this thing ‘cause my mother would never do such a crappy job with this. I've not gone through it, but I 8. ________ we’ll go through it together here. No, don’t say “Whoo!”

I’ve got pop-rocks, I’ve got bazooka gum. Okay… Oh, egg-shaped chalk. Oh yeah! What else? Bubble blower. What is she? She thinks I’m 10 years old. It’s crazy! What the hell is this? A tea-bag thing! Herb scissors. Every year it’s a bunch of crazy, may I say, shit 💩? Peanut chews. I don’t like those. Guillermo, did you get your son an Easter basket yet for Easter? “No, not yet”. Oh I have one for you! Here, take it! I’ll give you the gum and stuff later. He’s gonna love those herb scissors. He really is!

I told her this is the last one! I actually made a big announcement, I said when I turn 50, I will 9. _________ accept an Easter basket. So this year we had a big argument about this. This year she gives it to me, I said: “Oh this is the last one!” She goes: “No, next year is the last one”. Isn’t that..? I’ll tell ya, I’ve got a lot of dumb arguments, this may have been the dumbest argument I’ve ever had with anyone.

You can see the answers in the transcript below.

💡 Here's some good vocabulary that can be useful in everyday conversations:

At least Santa makes sense - he makes toys...

Something that makes sense, it has a clear meaning and it is easy to understand. If a person makes sense, they are reasonable and show good judgement.

For example:

I can't understand anything she says. It just doesn't make sense.

These numbers make no sense! They just don't add up...

🔹RUS: иметь смысл, быть логичным

We need to come up with an explanation for this.

Come up with (phrasal verb) - to suggest or think of an idea / plan.

For example:

Don't worry about Sam. He's very smart and he'll come up with something.

How did you come up with this idea? (=how did you think of this?)

🔹RUS: придумать

I figured we’ll go through it together here.

Very often instead of saying I think, people say I figure.

For example:

You are so busy with the housework. I figured I should help you out (=I thought I should come and help you out).

I am sorry I will have to cancel our meeting today. - Yeah, I figured that. You've been sick for a few days. (=Yeah, that's what I thought).

🔹RUS: полагать, подумать, думать, понять

So this year we had a big argument about this.

When you have an argument with someone, you don't agree with them and you speak angrily. Sometimes you can also hear people say - we had a fight. It doesn't mean though that they had a physical fight, it means that they had an argument.

For example:

My mom didn't let me go out last night and we had a big argument about it.

I can't believe that Mike and Jane are still together. They have huge arguments about every single thing!

🔹RUS: ссориться, поспорить

I will no longer accept an Easter basket.

When you say you will no longer do something, it means that you used to do that, but you won't do it any more.

For example:

I will no longer eat junk food. (I used to eat junk food, but I won't eat it again).

Susan bought a new house, she no longer lives here.

🔹 RUS: больше не
